Input and advice from friends and family can be great! It’s also really important to have a solid support network, so we very much value secondhand input from the people who know you best. The benefit of therapy however is that your therapist is coming into your life from a place of zero knowledge of your life or who you are prior to the day we meet, which helps us with assessing and helping you from an unbiased perspective. Friends and family are often well meaning but typically don’t have the training to help you see the patterns that are causing you stress or, moreoften, don’t have the proper training to help you change these patterns. Your therapist will provide you with a thorough assessment of the factors that have and continue to shape you and will prescribe treatment recommendations based upon such.
the annoying but honest answer to this is-it really depends on you! Some people feel their reason(s) for seeking therapy have resolved after just a few sessions, other people remain in therapy for years, as they continue to target different areas for improvement in their life. Therapy is unique though, some people come for weekly sessions and others find optimal benefits with biweekly or even monthly maintenance sessions. You and your therapist will regularly assess where you feel you are at in your treatment, and proceed accordingly!

there are most certainly benefits to in-person therapy! Nothing beats human interaction, and some things just can’t be replicated via the web.
that being said, online therapy can be just as effective as in person therapy, provided the client(s) are willing to put in the work!
